Aphrodite Restaurant most beautiful in Kalyves
This Aphrodite Restaurant review page is from the Completely Crete website Eating out in Crete section.
The Aphrodite Restaurant is found at the village square of Kalyves, close to Chania here on the Greek island of Crete.
Aphrodite Restaurant in Kalyves
 APHRODITE RESTAURANT INTERIOR |
We don't wish to cause a fight or, Zeus forbid, a war, amongst the restaurants in Kalyves but we feel Aphrodite stands out as the most chic and up market restaurant in the Cretan village.
If there was to be a beauty contest amongst the Kalyves restaurants then the Aphrodite Restaurant would be the runaway winner.
We just love the Aphrodite Restaurant!
Decorated with a beautiful flair the Aphrodite Restaurant lives up to its Greek goddess namesake and is indeed decorated with lovers of beauty in mind. The glassware, table linen, crockery and cutlery are top of the range.
Diners have a choice of eating inside the plush interior or dining al fresco in the patio garden at the rear, where the aroma of jasmine flowers fill the air and swallows swoop gracefully overhead.
Here's what Jean from England has to say about the Aphrodite Restaurant in Kalyves:
"Our family go to Crete every year for our holidays and we visit Aphrodite every evening and have a drink outside in the square. We
have also had lovely meals in the New Restaurant. Aphrodite and the
staff are always very welcoming to us. We will be visiting again this August 2009 with our family and look forward to our lovely meals."
The Aphrodite Restaurant has to be given the title of Kallisti (Kallisti) meaning "Most Beautiful'. Like the Greek goddess herself it has outstanding beauty and demands attention.
Here's a tale from Greek mythology and Ancient Greek history that explains further the beauty of Aphrodite and how wars can start when judging beauty.
The story begins with the Greek god Zeus, (incidentally he was born here in Crete!) who was planning a wedding banquet for Peleus and Thetis. Everyone was to be invited apart from Eris, the goddess of strife and discord.
Eris was understandably unhappy at being snubbed and decided to cause some trouble at the wedding reception. She created a golden apple and wrote upon it the word Kallisti meaning "To the fairest one" and rolled it into the banquet.
Three beautiful Greek goddesses were attendees at the wedding reception and all claimed the golden apple was meant for them. They were Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
They squabbled over the ownership of the apple and the title of 'the fairest' until Zeus commanded a mere human named Paris to decide which of the goddesses was the most beautiful.
All three goddesses were very beautiful and so it was never going to be an easy decision for the simple shepherd boy Paris. Each goddess offered a bribe to Paris if he chose her. Hera offered great wealth, Athena offered heroic victories and Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world Helen of Troy.
Paris chose Aphrodite and gave her the apple and title of most beautiful. True to her word, Aphrodite gave Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta to Paris. This and the wrath of the rejected goddesses Hera and Athena led to the Trojan War.
 APHRODITE |
We were privileged to be in attendance of the grand opening ceremony and blessing (Agiasmos)of the Aphrodite Restaurant in Kalyves by the local Greek orthodox priest in October 2008. The owners Emmanuel and Nikolaos Katsoulis hosted the event.
The blessing ceremony itself involved the setting out of central a table, to act as a makeshift altar, for the priest to place all he needed to conduct the religious ceremony. The items a huge bowl of water, a religious Icon, a censer for incense and a bunch of basil all found their appropriate position on the central table.
Locals, tourists, customers, staff and a local Crete TV news film crew all watched in silent reverence as the priest blessed first the water. After 5 minutes or so of chanting and prayers the priest then dunked the basil into the water and then sprinkled the water from the basil onto the silent throng.
The Aphrodite Restaurant is set to open all year round which is very good news for us and other locals as most of the other restaurants and tavernas in Kalyves close during the winter months once the tourists have gone home.
The menu offers a wide choice of Greek food and is carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The staff are very attentive and are eager for you to have the best dining experience possible.
The house red wine is simply divine and incredibly cheap. A half litre carafe is under 3 euros. We've had worse wine costing 10 times the price!
Try the plentiful and colourful Greek salad, laden with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and topped with local olives, home pickled capers and fabulous Feta cheese. The cheese has to be the best the area has to offer. Or try the homemade Skafia herb and cheese filled pies, smothered in honey a local delicacy.
A plateful of deep fried potatoes and a wholesome spicy Bekri Meze, Stifado (beef stew) or baked lamb should allow you to waddle your way from the restaurant.
But dont forget to save room for the complimentary sweet and a glass or two of Raki served at the end of your meal.
Yes, all in all the Aphrodite Restaurant deserves the title of Kallisti (Kallisti)
Incidentally the word Kallisti (Kallisti) was the name given to ancient Thira, Santorini. And if you love Crete then you'll love the romantic Greek island of Santorini. Visit our sister site of Simply Santorini. Com for all you'll need to know about Santorini.
