Car Tax in Crete…

The Greek equivalent of UK Car Tax is an annual payment that runs from January 1st until December 31st.

So if you buy a car late in the year, say October you still have to pay for a full year and renew your road tax again in December.

ALL PAID UP SINCE 2003!
The amount you pay for your Car Tax on Crete increases with the size of your car engine but compares very favourably to the amount of Road Tax payable in the UK, for example.

Annual car tax renewal is now automated and your Crete home address for your Greek Tax number is where the annual car tax renewal letter is normally sent. Payment can then be made at your bank. If the tax office don't know your address, but they know your accountant's address, they may send it there.

If you do not receive your renewal letter, as happened to us, you will need to go to your local tax office.

Go early in December to avoid queuing as everyone will be rushing to renew before the end of the month. If you fail to renew before December 31st you will be liable for a penalty for late payment – double your Road Tax bill!

As is often the Greek way you will need to queue at three separate windows before you get you clutches on the prize of next years car tax windscreen sticker.

First queue at the counter that issues bills, brandishing your registration document. Next you'll need to go to another window with your bill, to pay the cashier. Next, collect your Car Tax sticker from a final window by showing your receipt.

Once you've got your sticker with the relevant year indicated, don't forget to stick it on your windscreen! It's an offence not to display it. Many drivers leave their old stickers on the windscreen and create patterns of past stickers from down the years. Crazy!

Drive carefully!
