Café in Kalyves
HARRY IN A CAFÉ IN KALYVES
It's great having visitors from the Old Country and we have just had my mum and her brother, my Uncle Harry, over for a week. They stayed in an apartment each, virtually on the beach, at the very centre of things at Kalyves village.

We had a great time, but as always, it's hard balancing an itinerary between doing too much so people get tired, hot and bothered, and not doing enough, so people get bored.

I think we got it more or less spot on, and if you want their itinerary and a useful guide for you too when you visit western Crete, you can download it here. This is a PDF file of about 1.18MB (it has some great pictures in it!), so it will take a couple of minutes to download. It's FREE!

We certainly packed a lot in and went out every day. The weather was hot and we tried to stay out of the midday sun as much as possible. We encouraged a siesta-style rest in the afternoon, and this worked out very well.

There's such a lot to do here, that it was hard to fit everything in. Highlights were lunch at Ela Restaurant in Chania, a visit to the Archeological Museum in Halidon Street, and a ride on a horse and cart round the harbour - which wasn't without incident.

Forgive me for raising a delicate point, but I always wondered why there was a total absence of manure deposits, considering the number of horses pulling tourists round the harbour in Chania. I thought there would be at the least some evidence. However, the reason why you never see frantic drivers scooping up the manure with little shovels is an ingenious device we discovered during our ride.

Strung below the horse's tail is a small hammock, and when the horse gives an indication that it wants to go, the driver gently lifts up its tail with his whip and the manure is deposited safely for removal at a later time - no fuss, no mess!

We managed to fit in a couple of trips to Chania and a ride to the market at Rethymnon too, but I guess that we just enjoyed eating out every meal time and putting on a bit of weight.

Things are starting to get quiet now, and there are no more planned visits for this year. Looking forward to spring already!

NEWS FROM CRETE AND GREECE

Road safety is a perennial problem in Greece (see Driving in Greece for some reasons why.)

This doesn't help...

This from the National News Website in Greece (ERT.)

Sentenced for Illegally Issuing Driving Licenses

"Four Transport Department employees in Trikala have been sentenced to 24 to 48 months in prison as they were involved in the illegal issuing of driving licenses. Specifically, a former Director and three more employees of the above department had illegally issued driving licenses to three candidate drivers. All of them appealed against the decision and were released. The case will be tried at an Appeals Court on a date to be specified in the future."
