Flights to Crete in March are not as frequent as the summer months. In fact winter in Crete can be difficult to get to as there are very few direct flights to Crete in March. You’ll need to fly to Athens and get a connecting flight from Athens to Chania, Sitia or Heraklion airport. This can work out to be quite costly in comparison to the direct cheap flights to Crete in the summer months.

Visitors to Crete in March may have limited choices as to the accommodation and hotels that are open. There are some hotels open in March on Crete, particularly in the main towns of Chania, Heraklion, Rethymnon and Sitia but you may have to search long and hard to find hotels in the holiday resorts.

The wild flowers are amazing on Crete in March with many blossoming at this time of year. Over 2,000 different kinds of flora are found on Crete of which 150 or so plants and wild herbs are endemic, which means that they do not exist in any other place in the world. Wild Cretan flowers, among them rare orchids grow abundantly in March in Crete. 

There can be some very pleasant days in March on Crete with warm sunshine and clear blue sky days, making it the perfect time of year to bird watch the many and varied birds of Crete, including Chaffinches, Gold Finches, Blackbirds, Blue Tits and Great Tits.

March in Crete also sees the first Swallows arriving and they are always a welcome sight bringing with them the promise of warmer and sunnier days.

Birds of prey are also in abundance in March in Crete with Buzzards circling and Kestrels hovering in the clear blue skies of Crete. 

March in Crete is also a great  time to visit some of the archaeological sites like Knossos near Heraklion, Aptera close to Chania or the Minoan Palace at Malia as there aren’t as many visitors as in the hot summer months and the wild flowers around these sites are in abundance.

Visiting the museums of Crete can also be great in March in Crete. The major towns of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon and Aghios Nikolaos all have fantastic archaeological museums featuring Minoan artefacts and other finds from the Roman era.

Another interesting day out in March in Crete is a visit to Crete Aquarium close to Heraklion. It’s a fabulous and fascinating place for the young and old alike. You can experience what lives in the Mediterranean sea at first hand.
