Sougia

This Sougia page is from the Beach Resorts section of the Completely Crete website.

Sougia lies on the south coast of the gorgeous Greek island of Crete. Sougia is an away from it all location that offers traditional Cretan hospitality in a very peaceful, laid back fishing village.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the big towns of Chania or Rethymnon, but close enough for a day trip visit Sougia makes for a very peaceful holiday base.

The south coast of Crete s generally quieter than the north coast resorts but still attracts visitors who like a peaceful holiday. Sougia is great for families on a budget too as both the accommodation and restaurants tend to be cheaper than some of the busier north coast resorts.

Visitors who tend to stay in Sougia adore walking, hiking, swimming, snorkelling and even nudist bathing.

Although not officially a nudist beach, Sougia Beach tolerates discreet naturists. Click here for more on Crete nudist beaches. It is however not compulsory to bare all and the naturists tend to use the far end of the lovely long beach.

Sougia beach is over 1km long and is quite pebbly in places. The beach at Sougia, like all Crete south coast resorts has the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea lapping its shores.

Mostly unshaded apart from a few tamarisk trees and without many sun beds and parasols for hire the beach has a natural feel to it.

We used Sougia beach and really found it very peaceful after we'd hiked the nearby Agia Irini Gorge which is popular with visitors to the area. It is a very pretty and relatively easy hike for the fit and active.

Visitors can also walk the "easy way" through the famous Samaria Gorge from Sougia by catching the Agia Roumeli ferry.

Because Sougia is a small fishing village with a little fishing harbour the local restaurants and Tavernas tend to serve the local catch of the day. All the restaurants in Sougia serve excellent food at very reasonable prices.

Try Galini restaurant in Sougia for a wide and varied menu or for the best fresh fish dishes give Kyma a try. There are only a handful of Sougia Tavernas so even if you stay for just a week you can try them all.

Accommodation at Sougia tends to be small family run self catering apartments or small hotels. There are no oversized or impersonal large luxury hotels in Sougia. In fact the whole resort of Sougia has a small friendly family feel to it.
