    Anemone...

Anenome coronaria
ANEMONE CORONARIA

We're still in winter but the spring flowers of Crete are beginning to bloom. The vibrant and gorgeous coloured Anemones are carpeting the hillsides. The varied shades of pinks, purples and lilacs combine to bring a burst of vibrant colour on the hillsides of Crete.

According to Greek mythology the Anemone was born from the blood of Aphrodite and Adonis. Others believe the petals of the Anemone are the tears of the Greek goddess Demeter for her daughter Persephone.

Anemone (Anemone coronaria) comes from the Greek word for wind Anemos (Anemos).

The ancient Greeks believed the lovely vibrant coloured Anemone opened up by the power of the wind.

We took a walk around ancient Aptera, near Chania and saw all the beautiful Anemones covering the hills.

They look so beautiful!

The lovely Anemone features in some of the best books on flowers of Crete.
